Something for the weekend – My Favourite Film: “Tillsammans” – Americana UK

Well the more astute of you may have noticed today is my 50th birthday. I mean Jesus Christ, FIFTY – what did I do in a past life to deserve this? Anyway as a birthday present to myself, please humour me for a couple of minutes. In recent years I’ve become mildly obsessed with a Swedish film which has long been my favourite of all time even though it’s near impossible to get hold of these days. It’s a Lukas Moodysson movie about a commune in Sweden in the 1970s, and there is at least one other person in the world who also ranks it as their favourite film ever – and for many of the same reasons as me: it’s lefty with shades of grey, extremely funny and most of all seeped in compassion for all its characters. As The Guardian put it: “Rather than a melody, it has become a chord: joyful and painful at once, it offers you hope and at the same time shows you the hopelessness of it.” Joyfully, it was announced this year that there is a follow-up in the pipeline which I’m almost dreading in terms of the high bar in my head. If you do manage to find it, it will be the best two hours you spend this weekend (unless you’re seeing Isbell tonight in Manchester of course!) Here’s the slightly awful US trailer anyway which is the only one I could find. Have a good one.
