Bob Dylan has laid out plans for new book The Philosophy of Modern Song.
Rock’s poet laureate has a slim but effective catalogue of books, including his fantastic 2004 tome Chronicles: Volume One.
After an 18 year wait a new book is in the works, with The Philosophy Of Modern Song featuring more than 60 essays by the Bard.
In it, Bob Dylan waxes lyrical on work by everyone from Elvis Costello to Nina Simone via Hank Williams and Stephen Foster.
Out on November 8th via Simon & Schuster, with the press release noting that Dylan “analyses what he calls the trap of easy rhymes, breaks down how the addition of a single syllable can diminish a song, and even explains how bluegrass relates to heavy metal…”
In a statement, Jonathan Karp (president and CEO of Simon & Schuster) says…
“The publication of Bob Dylan’s kaleidoscopically brilliant work will be an international celebration of songs by one of the greatest artists of our time. The Philosophy of Modern Song could only have been written by Bob Dylan. His voice is unique, and his work conveys his deep appreciation and understanding of songs, the people who bring those songs to life, and what songs mean to all of us.”
It certainly looks intriguing – Dylan’s songwriting rumination on his Theme Time Radio Hour shows were always worth tuning in for.
Bob Dylan’s most recent studio album ‘Rough & Rowdy Ways’ was released in 2020.
